Johnny Knoxville And The Jackass Phenomenon

Published: October 10, 2006

Some would say that Johnny Knoxville is the ultimate amateur stuntman, making a living out of performing stunts that regular people would never do. During his childhood he poked a hornet's nest with a stick and threw himself out of his own crib. Later in life he was hired by Big Brother magazine to perform other stunts. One of his first stunts for the magazine was shooting himself with pepper spray, a taser gun, a stun gun, and a .38 caliber handgun.

Today, Knoxville, along with other Steve-O, Bam Margera, Chris Pontius and others make a living performing stunts for MTV and feature films. Jackass was a hit show for Knoxville and his crew, propelling Knoxville into a new acting career.

Born Phillip John Clapp on March 11, 1971, he took the name Knoxville as an homage to his hometown Knoxville, Tennessee. It seems Knoxville's love for stunts and practical jokes came from his father, Phil Clapp. Knoxville's father pulled many pranks like staging a gunfight during a Christmas party, making Ex-Lax milkshakes, and sending phony letters to members of Knoxville's football team from a VD clinic. The grossest prank that Clapp played on Knoxville was "(R)unning a lukewarm hot dog through Johnny's lips while (Knoxville) was asleep (then pretending to zip his pants when his son awoke).”

In 2000, the MTV Network premiered Jackass. With the tagline "Don't Try This At Home" and a logo of a skull and cross-crutches, Knoxville, Margera, and the other Jackass crew performed crazy stunts for the viewing public's amusement. The MTV show ran from 2000 to 2002.

In 2002, Jackass: The Movie premiered in theaters. With a movie budget estimated at 5 million dollars, the first Jackass film grossed over $22.7 million during its opening weekend of October 27, 2002. In January of 2003, the film earned a total of $64.2 million.

Because of all the money the first Jackass film earned, a sequel was released on September 24, 2006. Jackass Number Two earned $29 million during its opening weekend even though it was only released on a little over 3,000 screens. The website RottenTomatoes reported a third Jackass film may possibly be in the works. Though Knoxville is "satisfied with the conclusion of the second "Jackass," he still has some stunt ideas for a third installment, though he didn't say exactly what those stunts were.

Aside from his work on the Jackass television shows and movies, Knoxville has done commercials early in his career for Taco Bell, Coors Light, and Mountain Dew. Later on, he appeared in the films Coyote Ugly (2000), Men in Black II (2002), and The Ringer and The Dukes of Hazard, both in 2005. Knoxville is married to his wife Melanie and they have a ten-year-old daughter, Madison.
