Dumb blondes put stamps on faxes, ask for price checks at dollar stores, try to drown fish, and try to put M&Ms in alphabetical order. We've all heard the dumb blonde jokes and probably know a dumb blonde. But why is it only blondes who are dumb? People never hear about dumb brunettes or dumb redheads.
There are many theories about the origin of the dumb blonde. Some say that brain cells are killed off from the bleach used to lighten hair color. Another theory is it started with the 1925 book Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos. The book, and the film starring Marilyn Monroe, told the story of Lorelei Lee who is beautiful but not very bright.
The "ditzy dumb blonde" has been portrayed in many different areas over the last few decades, not just in books and movies. Suzanne Somers' character Chrissy Snow on Three's Company, comedienne Goldie Hawn from Laugh-In, Reese Witherspoon in the film Legally Blonde, as well as celebrities Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton, and Jenny McCarthy are some modern day dumb blondes.
Wikipedia notes a difference between a dumb blonde and a bimbo. Though a bimbo is similar stereotype to a dumb blonde, a bimbo can have any hair color; whereas a dumb blonde, is only blonde.
The dumb blonde is characterized as a pretty face, blonde hair, a "goofy," blank facial expression, and zero intelligence. Some brunette women feel inferior to blondes because they think blonde women are more attractive or popular than others. This can sometimes lead to female confrontations. Sometimes men use the "dumb blonde" label to justify being rejected by women.
Today's society seems intent on trying to end the dumb blonde persona. Blonde women are trying to end the myth of the dumb blonde. Taking the name as an insult, they counteract the label, most likely by proving their intelligence.
What should we do when we hear about the blonde who tripped over a cordless phone, got stabbed in a shoot-out, or took a spoon to the Super Bowl? Laugh and move on. Try not to consider a real blonde as dumb just because of the jokes that represent them.
